Kill Team at XP Games!

I finally  had the luck to play my first game of Kill Team (using the beautifully painted Death Guard Onur gifted me) at XP Games at Elko NV. Robert Rush kindly ran a game for me, despite having had a long night shift at his job. He ran his Veteran Guard against my Death Guard. I opted for two Traitor Marine units, thus having six figures, to Robert's much more substantial guard. I lost the game but had a lot of fun.

Robert ran the game with a good balance of competitiveness and teaching. I enjoyed it. It ran a longer than I would expect (I think it took us three hours from set up to end), but I was learning. I liked what I played. The role of terrain was great, providing a good environment for choices. The units with their various Tactical and Strategic Ploys added to the wealth of options, providing with some elements of the kind of strategic gaming I see in Saga. I really liked that thematically the two factions played in accordance to what I think the "lore" presents them us. My Space Marines were ponderous, deadly warriors, hard to kill, and deadly in combat. The Veteran Guardsmen provided a myriad of options, had better command and control (enjoying more Command Points then my Death Guard), but were easily mowed down if not kept well. Robert dominated three of the four Turning Points (Turns), but I had an excellent Third one. Crucially unlike in many games of 40k were I did not always understand what went wrong, here despite this being my first game, I immediately could grasp what I did wrong (i.e I should always activate the Icon Bearer, or any wounded operatives first if I have the initiative, i.e I should husband my crucial CPs especially when facing forces with better Command and Control).

I still feel that the game is overburdened with many special cases, but this a GW game. That said compared to 40k, I felt it was easier to get a command of your faction. In the end I can say that I will happily try Kill Team again. I have a feeling I would prefer Xenos Rampant for larger games (equivalent to 500 point games of 40k), but Kill Team, as is usual with GWs specialist games, does seem a good way to have some fun in the 40k Universe.
