With Spring Semester 2025 ending I come to the logical end of my hobby budget year. Since I am on 10-month contract, I am not paid in summer if I am not teaching. Now I am lucky, as I work at a access institution, so I have enough summer courses to support my family, but little else. This means no major purchases June-August 2025.
In the last two months I overdid it with hobby purchases, though a lot of it was funded by trading stuff for Noble Knight store credit. I felt a bit under pressure these last three years with all the moves, and decided to be irresponsible and spent a bit extra on the hobby.
The most expensive purchases were actually terrain, and logistic materials (bases etc).
Hobby wise I bought miniatures for my Imperial Agents based 40k force for the Illustris Campaign (Necromunda Escher Gang, remainder of Sabbathiel's core retinue [3d printed, Alternative Armies or Etsy], Rogue Trader enourage [3d printed, Altenrative Armies, Reaper Miniatures] , Wargames Atlantic Les Grongards, 3d printed Taurox proxy), got 3d-printed the remainder of my BFG fleets (again inspired from the Illustris campaign), made changes to my Death Guard (traded my Nurlge Witch, Nurlgings, and Hellbrute proxy for the start of a SM force, and bought a 3d printed Knight Abominant proxy) and bought WW2 28mm Greeks for Bolt Action. These will be the painting and building projects for the summer, toghether with the Oeversee 1864 dedicated terrain set.
I have decided to fund the hobby by part-time work and change my spending patterns. I do get part time work, though nothing long-term secure. I usually plan to spend some money at the stores once a month, and at a secondary level on major projects. This is not sustainable as pocket money will get used for family emergencies. From now on I will work with a fixed budget per year. I probably will still get incidentals from the stores I play at, but my main support will be one time spending. Preferably secured as store credit. I am setting a budget of 300 USD (about 1% of my annual pay after taxes and deductions) per year for Fall 2025-Spring 2030 period. Hopefully in 2030 I will get tenure and an increase in annual pay that can permit adding another 100 USD per year.
